​The City of Johannesburg is inspiring the next generation of environmental professionals through its Environmental Career Expo, held recently at Eastbank Hall in Alexandra as part of National Science Month. Hosted by the City's Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), in partnership with the Environmental Health Unit and other stakeholders, the expo encouraged young people to explore careers in environmental science under the theme, “Science, Technology and Innovation are for Everyone."

National Science Month is an annual celebration that brings together a range of stakeholders to showcase science-based activities and initiatives. The programme seeks to contribute to the development of a society that is knowledgeable about science, critically engaged, and scientifically literate.

Dozens of high school pupils from Alexandra and surrounding communities attended the expo, where they had the opportunity to engage with professionals, academics and industry experts. Exhibitors included the Science Faculty from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Bombela Operating Company, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), EISD, the City's Environmental Health Unit, Rand Water, Pikitup and Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo.

The expo showcased a wide range of career opportunities in environmental sciences while highlighting education, training and skills development pathways available to learners. Participants interacted directly with professionals, explored career options and gained valuable insights into how they can contribute to climate resilience, sustainable development and building a greener future.

One of the keynote speakers, Dr Mabunga UJ, shared his personal career journey and encouraged pupils to pursue careers in science. He highlighted the importance of mentorship in helping learners successfully transition from high school to higher education and stressed the value of gaining practical work experience alongside academic studies.

Lydia Siphuma, Deputy Director: Education and Awareness at the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, said: “The career expo demonstrates the power of partnerships in inspiring and investing in the next generation of environmental professionals. By connecting young people with knowledge, career opportunities and industry experts, we are empowering them to help build a more sustainable, resilient and environmentally responsible city for future generations."

The expo forms part of the City's ongoing commitment to developing environmentally conscious citizens while equipping young people with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue rewarding careers in the growing green economy.
