The City of Johannesburg is urging customers to monitor their water consumption and check their properties regularly for leaks to help prevent water losses and unexpectedly high municipal bills. A sudden increase in consumption may be caused by increased use, a leak or another issue requiring investigation. Early detection can help customers reduce water losses and prevent accounts from escalating.
Check for possible leaks
- Check your water meter: Turn off all taps, appliances and other water outlets. If the meter continues registering consumption, there may be a leak on the property.
- Report municipal leaks: Leaks on the municipal meter or infrastructure outside the property boundary should be reported to the City immediately for investigation and repair.
- Repair internal leaks: Leaks within the property boundary are generally the responsibility of the property owner. Customers should use a qualified plumber to investigate and repair leaks promptly.
- Check your meter and bill: Regularly compare readings with previous months and check whether the account is based on an actual or estimated reading. Customers are encouraged to photograph their meter, showing the reading and date, as a useful record when querying unusual consumption.
Customers who suspect a faulty analogue meter can request a meter test through the City's customer service process. Applicable testing fees may apply.

Customers facing a high bill following an internal leak should approach a Customer Service Centre. Depending on the circumstances, assistance may include an Acknowledgement of Debt payment arrangement or, where qualifying criteria are met, guidance on the Debt Relief Programme.
The City encourages customers to act early by monitoring consumption, reporting municipal leaks and repairing internal leaks promptly. This can help conserve water and prevent avoidable increases in municipal accounts.
