The City of Johannesburg's Department of Economic Development brought together small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) from Roodepoort and Soweto for a workshop at Roodepoort City Hall to explore business opportunities in waste management and recycling.
The workshop focused on household recycling, waste sorting, business development and job creation, equipping entrepreneurs with practical knowledge of the recycling value chain, industry requirements and available support programmes.
Kamogelo Hamisi, an official from Petco, outlined opportunities in recycling and explained the importance of meeting industry standards. The presentation highlighted potential business opportunities, including establishing and operating compliant buy-back centres.

A highlight was the entrepreneurial journey of Mxolisi Mangokoana, who started his business using his own money after being medically boarded following a workplace injury. Through determination and careful financial management, he has since established three companies in security, construction and waste recycling.
Mangokoana encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to remain hands-on in their businesses, manage their finances carefully and stay focused on their goals.
“I don't rush to spend money on myself. I give myself a salary from the money generated by the company I run. This is very crucial, especially in the first six months. Manage your own company, spend time on it and be involved in the running of your own business," he said.
“Don't be in competition; run your own race at your own pace. Never lose your vision. Importantly, don't do business because you are stranded, but have passion for it."
The workshop also covered waste management best practices, business opportunities across the recycling value chain, regulatory compliance, enterprise development support, market access and partnerships. Participants were encouraged to explore environmentally responsible business practices that contribute to economic growth and employment creation.
An official from the Department of Social Development urged entrepreneurs experiencing substance abuse challenges to seek assistance and support. The official also encouraged participants to manage their money responsibly to improve their livelihoods and support their families.
Through the initiative, the City continues to promote entrepreneurship and SMME development while encouraging greater participation in the green economy.
By connecting entrepreneurs with industry knowledge, potential markets and support programmes, the workshop aimed to help businesses establish sustainable operations, create jobs and unlock economic opportunities in the waste management and recycling sector.
