The Roodepoort Museum came alive with laughter, learning and meaningful connection as mothers and children from Thuto Pele Day Care Centre gathered for a special Mothers' Day celebration that brought history to life in a fun and engaging way.

What started as a simple museum outing turned into a memorable bonding experience, showing how heritage can connect generations through storytelling, creativity and play.

Guests were welcomed into the museum for guided tours that offered a glimpse into the rich local history of Roodepoort. While parents explored exhibits and historical narratives, children enjoyed an interactive learning experience designed especially for young minds, introducing them to artefacts and stories from the past.

A standout moment of the day was the Roodepoort Rocks programme, which encouraged children to express themselves creatively through colouring activities inspired by museum exhibits. Armed with crayons and paper, the youngsters transformed black-and-white illustrations into colourful masterpieces, each reflecting their imagination and personality.

Rapelang Simente, the executive director of Young Voice Academy and one of the facilitators, highlighted the importance of creative learning. “It is important for parents to see what their children are learning. Through art and simple activities, children can engage creatively with the world around them."

Parents praised the initiative for creating a meaningful and educational experience.

“It was educational and amazing. We saw things that no longer happen today, and it is important for both the children and us as parents to understand this history," said parent Aluwani Mbedzi.

Gladys Motlhamme, the principal of Thuto Pele Day Care Centre, said the event achieved exactly what the centre hoped for. “It has been a beautiful experience. Seeing mothers and children bonding while learning about history together has been wonderful. This kind of exposure is important for our children."

The celebration ended with a relaxed mini picnic on the museum grounds, where families shared food, laughter and reflections on the day's activities.
