After five years of delays, a house that stood in the way of development in the Tladi Camp informal settlement in Soweto has finally been demolished.
The structure, built within the settlement, was brought down on Tuesday morning in the presence of residents, City of Johannesburg officials and members of the media. The demolition followed legal confirmation that the Department of Human Settlements had secured an eviction and demolition order from the Johannesburg High Court.
The house had stalled critical development in Tladi Camp, blocking the construction of an access road and the electrification of the area by Eskom.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, described the delay as deeply frustrating for residents who had long awaited basic services.
“We were able to install water and ablution facilities, but electrification could not proceed because this structure was identified as an obstruction to both the electricity rollout and the construction of access roads," he said.
Cllr Mabaso said the City had engaged extensively with the occupants. Following the passing of the original owner, the family managing the estate granted permission for the demolition. However, a relative contested the decision, escalating the matter to the Public Protector and the South African Human Rights Commission without success.
“The City even provided an alternative stand within the settlement layout, but the objections continued, ultimately forcing us to seek legal intervention," he said.
He added that the situation was further complicated by the fact that the individual opposing the demolition was not a resident of the settlement and had rented out the structure.
“While the broader community supported the demolition, one individual stood in the way of development and service delivery. We cannot allow a single obstacle to delay essential services for most residents," Mabaso said.
With the structure now removed, the City will proceed with electrification, road construction and the finalisation of the township establishment process in Tladi Camp.
