The City of Johannesburg hosted its inaugural Women's Symposium at the Brixton Multipurpose Centre on Saturday, 22 August 2026, bringing scores of women together under the theme “Perfecting Her Game" for a day focused on empowerment, sport, wellness, leadership and personal growth.
Hosted by the City's Community Development Department: Sport and Recreation Directorate, the symposium formed part of Women's Month celebrations and marked the 70th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women's March.
With its “Sporty Glam" theme, the event created a vibrant platform for women from different backgrounds to connect, learn and share experiences. Industry leaders and motivational speakers addressed issues including personal branding, career development, financial literacy, mental health, mentorship, wellness, gender-based violence, sport and personal safety.
Speaker of Council Cllr Margaret Arnolds delivered a moving message of resilience, sharing her personal experience as a survivor of sexual assault. She encouraged women not to allow difficult experiences to define their futures. “Do not wither within your storm. Make your own history. Write your history of 2026. Your past does not determine your future."
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Thapelo Amad said the event paid tribute to the women of 1956 who fought against pass laws and helped pave the way for future generations. “We honour them, we honour the women in sports, who have taken their place in the once male-dominated sporting codes. We celebrate the women of our country and our City."
Dr Natasha Janse van Rensburg spoke about career development and the different seasons of professional growth, achievement and learning. She encouraged women to focus on their own journeys rather than comparing themselves with others.

Financial literacy was also placed firmly on the agenda, with Portia Malatji highlighting the importance of financial independence, sound financial decision-making and building generational wealth.
The symposium also promoted physical wellness and personal safety. Attendees participated in an energetic Zumba session, while Sensei Shandré Bridle facilitated a practical self-defence session, highlighting the importance of awareness, confidence and using both body and voice to protect oneself.
Discussions also focused on women in sport, with speakers including Dineo Magagula and representatives from Girl For Sport exploring barriers facing women in professional sport, personal branding and mental resilience.
Exhibitors from the finance, health and wellness sectors provided information and services to support women's personal and professional development.
Karen du Plessis from Sport and Recreation said the symposium was designed to give women and girls access to mentorship, resources and community support.
More than a day of talks and activities, the inaugural symposium celebrated women's resilience and achievements while creating a platform to inspire the next generation to “Perfect Her Game" and write her own story.
