The cold winter air did little to slow down the energy at Lord Khanyile Community Hall in Ivory Park, where music, determination, and community spirit filled the venue during a vibrant aerobics session by the City's Sports and Recreation Department in Region A.
With participants sweating through every routine and motivational chants echoing across the area, one message stood out clearly — summer bodies are made in winter.
The aerobics session formed part of the healthy lifestyle programme that Sports and Recreation Region A continues to roll out across communities, encouraging residents to prioritise fitness, wellness, and positive living. Leading the charge was fitness instructor Samuel Fatule, whose passion and consistency have inspired many residents across the region to adopt healthier lifestyles.

“Fitness is not seasonal. Winter is actually the best time to prepare yourself physically and mentally. We want people to understand that health is wealth, and these sessions are about changing lives," said Fatule as participants powered through energetic workout routines.
The programme has also become a tool for social development, particularly among young people who are often exposed to negative influences in their communities. According to Mandla Mahlangu, the initiative is about more than exercise. “As Sports and Recreation Region A, we are committed to building healthier communities while creating safe and positive spaces for young people. These programmes help keep youth away from the streets while promoting discipline, self-confidence, and healthy living."
Among the many participants was Zamile Qangule from Ivory Park, who praised the City for investing in community wellness initiatives. “These sessions are helping us a lot as young people. Instead of spending time on the streets, we come here to exercise, stay healthy, and motivate each other. We appreciate the effort the City is making to bring these programmes closer to our communities."
As the session ended with smiles, laughter, and exhausted but motivated participants, it became clear that in Ivory Park, winter is no longer a season for slowing down — it is the season for building stronger, healthier communities ahead of summer.
