As South Africa marks Heritage Month, the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is proud to showcase the work it is delivering on behalf of the City of Johannesburg to protect, renew and celebrate the places that carry Joburg's collective memory. Through strategic public infrastructure and heritage-led urban regeneration, the JDA is helping the City preserve its stories, restore its landmarks and ensure that Johannesburg's heritage remains visible, accessible and meaningful for future generations.
Focusing on four guiding elements: Remember. Restore. Reconnect. Reimagine, we reflect the City's commitment to honouring the past while building a future Joburg that takes pride in its identity, its people and the public spaces that tell its story.
REMEMBER | Constitution Hill
Few places embody Johannesburg's complicated history as profoundly as Constitution Hill.
Once a prison complex comprising the Old Fort, Number Four and the Women's Jail, the site bore witness to some of the harshest realities of colonialism and apartheid. Thousands were incarcerated there, including political activists and ordinary people caught in an unjust system. Today, the precinct is home to the Constitutional Court – creating a remarkable dialogue between a difficult past and a democratic present.
On behalf of the City of Johannesburg, the JDA played an instrumental role in the urban regeneration of Constitution Hill, helping transform a place of confinement into a multidimensional precinct for constitutionalism, human rights, education, dialogue, tourism and public art.
RESTORE | Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum
The Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum stands as one of South Africa's most powerful places of remembrance, preserving the memory of the young people whose courage defined the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Named after 12-year-old Hector Pieterson, the site tells the story of a generation whose resistance became part of the country's journey towards democracy.
In 2026, as South Africa marked 50 years since the uprising, the JDA completed the revamp of the memorial's courtyard on behalf of the City of Johannesburg. The upgrades created a safer, more accessible, and contemplative environment through improved surfaces, lighting, landscaping, and seating, while engraved granite panels honour more than 500 victims of the events of 16 June 1976.
RECONNECT | Workers Cottages, Newtown
In Newtown, the restored Workers Cottages offer another way of confronting the city's past. Built in the early 20th century for white workers, artisans and supervisors, the cottages stood alongside the compound where Black migrant workers lived under a deeply segregated labour system. Together, the buildings physically reveal the inequalities that shaped Johannesburg's working life.
The JDA delivered the restoration for the City of Johannesburg, giving these important heritage structures new life while retaining their character. The project also created a platform for local artists, with 50 artworks acquired to form a permanent collection exploring themes of labour, memory and Johannesburg's urban identity.
REIMAGINE | Johannesburg City Library
At the Johannesburg City Library, heritage meets possibility. Opened in 1935, the protected heritage building is one of the city's architectural landmarks. Yet its significance has always extended beyond its walls. It is a place of learning, discovery and opportunity.
Through extensive upgrades implemented by the JDA on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, the library has been returned to public use while retaining its cultural and architectural significance.
By walking through Constitution Hill, reflecting at the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum, engaging with the Workers Cottages in Newtown and rediscovering the Johannesburg City Library, the public can experience first-hand how Joburg remembers, restores, reconnects and reimagines its living heritage.
