The Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) is intensifying its service delivery efforts to better support tenants while strengthening the long-term sustainability of its housing portfolio.
Through its “Walk the Floor" programme, alongside a clean-up campaign in partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, JOSHCO is taking practical, on-the-ground steps to improve living conditions across its developments.
Acting CEO Katlego Ditshego said: “Through programmes like Walk the Floor, we are strengthening our connection with tenants and responding directly to their needs. Our focus is on delivering reliable services, maintaining our properties to a high standard, and ensuring fairness across all our developments.
“By improving revenue collection and operational efficiency, we are also securing JOSHCO's sustainability so we can continue expanding access to quality, affordable housing for the people of Johannesburg."
The initiative focuses on direct engagement with tenants, enabling JOSHCO teams to identify and resolve issues quickly. This hands-on approach is helping to create cleaner, safer, and more comfortable living environments while reinforcing a shared sense of pride among residents.
At the same time, JOSHCO is strengthening its internal systems to ensure fair and efficient management. This includes verifying leaseholders to confirm that units are occupied by rightful tenants, as well as addressing outstanding rental accounts where tenants have the means to pay. These measures aim to promote accountability while safeguarding access to housing opportunities.
Tenants who meet their rental obligations benefit from improved maintenance, enhanced services, and a more secure living environment. For JOSHCO, improved revenue collection supports financial stability, enabling the organisation to reinvest in its properties and expand access to affordable housing. This work also contributes to the broader goals of the City of Johannesburg in strengthening revenue and ensuring long-term sustainability.
The management of commercial spaces within JOSHCO developments remains another key priority. By ensuring compliance with lease agreements and operational standards, the entity is fostering safer, more vibrant spaces that support both residents and local businesses. Looking ahead, JOSHCO continues to grow its housing portfolio.
Plans include the launch of a new inner-city student accommodation development aimed at bringing young people closer to economic and educational opportunities. A walkabout at the Riverside View Phase Four development is also scheduled to prepare for the next group of tenants.
This year marks 22 years of JOSHCO providing affordable rental housing — a significant milestone that reflects its enduring commitment to delivering dignified accommodation and building thriving communities across Johannesburg.
