Joburg Market has reaffirmed the importance of partnerships in addressing food insecurity and strengthening communities through its participation in the State of the NPO Address at Soweto Theatre. Hosted by the Nyatee Impact Foundation, the event brought together businesses, government departments and non-profit organisations (NPOs) to discuss ways to improve the sustainability and community impact of NPOs. They included the Mandoza Foundation, Department of Social Development, National Youth Development Agency, Brand South Africa and National Empowerment Fund.

Nyatee CEO Nthabiseng Montsho discussed its a
lliance aimed at capacitating NPOs, strengthening their operations and improving their long-term sustainability. “We aim to equip NPOs with the tools, knowledge and support they need to become more sustainable. This includes helping them identify funding opportunities, embrace digital transformation and strengthen their capacity to deliver meaningful impact."

Joburg Market's acting Senior Manager: Marketing and Communications, Tshegofatso Maakwe, joined the third panel discussion, which highlighted the need for strategic partnerships, shared resources and sustainable support systems to help NPOs continue serving communities effectively. As a key player in the fresh produce value chain, Joburg Market contributes to the food supply system while recognising that addressing food insecurity requires collective action to improve food access and build resilient communities.

Through its corporate social investment initiatives, the market also supports social development and community-focused interventions, linking its commercial mandate with broader efforts to improve residents' well-being.

“Building resilient communities requires collective action. NPOs understand the realities facing the people they serve, while businesses can contribute resources, expertise and partnerships. By working together, we can support initiatives that respond to community needs and contribute to lasting change," said Maakwe.
