The Joburg Market has strengthened its workplace safety efforts by enrolling nominated staff members in mandatory safety training. Led by the Market’s Training and Development Department, the initiative focuses on three core safety requirements critical to operations: First Aid Training, Fire Marshal Training and SHE Representative Training.
The focus was on Fire Marshal Training, which was conducted over three intensive days at the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services Training Academy in Brixton. The programme equipped participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to fire safety and emergency response. Throughout the training, staff members were introduced to the fundamentals of fire behaviour, fire prevention strategies, and basic firefighting techniques.
A key highlight of the programme was its strong focus on practical application. On the third day, participants took part in exercises that included evacuation procedures, identifying fire hydrants, correctly inspecting fire extinguishers, and physically extinguishing fires under supervision.
“Fire safety is not optional in an environment like the Johannesburg Market,” said Alain Goncalves, Manager: Occupational Health, Safety and Environment.
“We have a responsibility to ensure that our staff is trained, confident, and able to respond effectively in an emergency. This training helps us move from compliance to real preparedness.”
Having trained fire marshals on site is essential for creating a safer working environment. Marshals play a critical role in fire prevention, early response, and ensuring orderly evacuations, providing reassurance to staff, traders, and visitors alike.
The Johannesburg Market remains committed to prioritising health and safety by building internal capacity and embedding safety as a shared responsibility and everyday practice.
