The Joburg Market joined government, industry leaders, financiers and agro-processors at the Gauteng Agro-Processing Convention & Expo, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening South Africa's agricultural value chain and expanding opportunities for producers.
The two-day convention focused on solutions to grow Gauteng's agro-processing sector, with discussions centred on investment, market access, food safety, certification, packaging, distribution and value addition.
City of Ekurhuleni's MMC for Economic Development, Cllr Dora Mlambo, urged delegates to move beyond discussion and take decisive action, ending her address with the call: “Let our work begin."
The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's chief director, Motlatjo Makaepea, said more than 200 farmers and agro-processors have received compliance training to help them meet food safety standards and improve their competitiveness.
Economist and National Empowerment Fund (NEF) board chairperson Nthabi Moleko highlighted the importance of financing sustainable businesses that create jobs and drive inclusive economic growth.
Delivering the keynote address, Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Vuyiswa Ramokgopa challenged delegates to consider how South Africa could produce more, process more locally and retain greater economic value within its communities.
She identified food safety, certification, packaging and distribution as key challenges facing the sector, emphasising that sustainable economic growth requires deliberate planning and collaboration.
Industry experts also shared practical insights, emerging opportunities and innovative approaches to strengthening Gauteng's agro-processing industry.
Joburg Market was represented alongside several of its tenants and a registered market agent, highlighting its growing influence across the agricultural value chain.
As the country's largest fresh produce market, the Joburg Market remains committed to connecting producers with markets, supporting value addition and contributing to a more resilient, competitive and inclusive agricultural economy.
