The City of Johannesburg is celebrating a series of prestigious engineering awards that highlight the impact of its infrastructure investment on communities across the city.
Moeketsi Mohlabi, the Head of the Engineering Centre of Excellence, says the recognition reflects the City's commitment to delivering quality infrastructure that improves residents' daily lives.
“Engineering is not only about building infrastructure; it is also about ensuring that the work we deliver makes a meaningful difference and is recognised for its impact," says Mohlabi.
Three City-backed projects have received accolades through the Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA), which celebrates excellence in municipal engineering across South Africa.
The award-winning projects are:
- The Eastern Stormwater Channel rehabilitation and upgrade in Orange Grove, recognised for strengthening flood management and climate resilience.
- The Vlakfontein Transport Facility, honoured for promoting community upliftment and creating local economic opportunities.
- The Naledi Clinic, acknowledged for its innovative structural design and contribution to accessible healthcare.
All three projects were delivered by the Johannesburg Development Agency as part of the City's ongoing infrastructure programme.
Mohlabi emphasises that the awards reflect the dedication of project teams across departments. “These achievements belong to the engineers, project managers and teams who work tirelessly to deliver quality infrastructure. Our role is to ensure their work is recognised on platforms such as IMESA," he says.
The Engineering Centre of Excellence works closely with departments to identify high-impact projects and submit them to national awards programmes. Projects are evaluated based on innovation, community benefit and technical excellence.
For the City, the recognition is more than symbolic. “It shows that public funds are being invested responsibly and that our projects can compete with those of other major municipalities," Mohlabi adds.
He also ensures that award trophies are returned to the teams responsible for delivery.
“It's important that the people behind the work receive the recognition. These awards belong to them."
Mohlabi's own contribution to the sector has been acknowledged through his appointment as Vice-President for Operations at IMESA, where he supports the advancement of municipal engineering across the country.
Through continued investment in infrastructure and professional excellence, the City of Johannesburg remains committed to building a resilient, inclusive and well-serviced urban environment.
