Kwena Mokgokong is playing a key role in shaping the next generation of chartered accountants (CAs) in the City. As Director of the Academy of Chartered Accountants (ACA) in Group Governance, Mokgokong oversees the City's South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)-accredited training programme. She says the academy is committed to developing future CAs in the public sector while strengthening the City's financial management capabilities.

“What inspires me most is the opportunity to shape the future of the accounting profession in the public sector and contribute directly to its professionalisation," she says.

Mokgokong is particularly passionate about the progress and impact of the programme. A major highlight has been the academy's improved SAICA accreditation status, following a recent assessment that resulted in a low-risk rating.

“Working alongside Advocate Mlandu Kona, Head of Group Governance, the ACA office team and Group Governance officials have transformed the academy into one of the City's flagship talent development initiatives," she says.

“Another significant achievement has been seeing the calibre of talent attracted to the programme and watching trainees grow into confident professionals who are developing the professional values and technical competencies required to serve the City and the broader public sector."

As a CA herself, Mokgokong draws on her extensive public-sector experience and strong analytical skills to strengthen the training programme. Her responsibilities include providing strategic leadership, managing stakeholders, ensuring regulatory compliance, monitoring trainee development throughout their three-year training contracts, overseeing the programme's budget and creating opportunities for professional growth.

She hails from Botshabelo in the Free State and says her interest in accounting began with her enjoyment of numbers and problem solving.

“As I progressed in my studies, I realised that accounting is more than just numbers. It is about accountability, responsible stewardship of resources and making a positive contribution to our communities," she says.

Mokgokong joined the City in 2017 as Director: Group Financial Reporting, having previously served as Director: Accounting Support and Reporting at the National Treasury. She later served as Divisional Head: Financial Reporting and Assets at the City of Tshwane before returning to the City of Johannesburg in 2023 to lead the academy.

She holds an Accounting Degree, a Certificate of Theory in Accounting from the University of the Free State, and a Master's of Commerce in Taxation from the University of Pretoria. She has also completed the International Women's Forum South Africa Women Executive Leadership Programme through Duke Corporate Education.

Outside work, Mokgokong enjoys mentoring young professionals, reading, learning and spending quality time with family and friends.
