South Africans will head to the polls on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, to elect councillors who will represent their communities in local government for the next five years. Voting is an opportunity to have your say in how your municipality is run, how public money is spent and how services are delivered. So, make your voice count and have fun making your democratic choice!
“They decide how your municipality spends its money and delivers services. After the election, the new councillors choose a mayor," the Electoral Commission (IEC) explains.
Before leaving home, make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable voting experience. Pack your spectacles, hearing aids, walking stick and sunhat, if you need them. Wear comfortable clothing, stay hydrated and be prepared to spend some time at the voting station.
Here is what you need to know before heading out:
1. Check your voting station: Visit the Electoral Commission (IEC) website and use the My Voter Registration service to confirm your registration status, voting station and ward details.
2. Bring your ID: You must present your green barcoded ID book, smart ID card or a valid temporary identity certificate to vote.
3. Know the voting hours: Voting stations will be open from 07:00 to 21:00.
4. Understand your ballot papers: Voters in metropolitan municipalities receive two ballot papers: one to elect a ward councillor and another to choose a political party for the council. In municipalities outside the metros, voters receive three ballot papers, including one for the district council.
5. Follow the voting rules: Each voter may vote only once. Taking photographs of marked ballot papers and removing ballot papers from the voting station are not permitted.
Special voting takes place on 2 and 3 November 2026 for voters whose applications for special votes have been approved.
Whether you are a first-time voter or a seasoned participant in our democracy, take pride in exercising your right to vote.
Bring your ID, your essentials and your enthusiasm. Make your mark, celebrate your democratic freedom and help shape the future of your community!
