Metropolitan Tech Company is strengthening Johannesburg’s digital backbone

Johannesburg's digital future depends on more than the technology people see. It relies on a strong, reliable fibre network that quietly supports essential municipal services every day. To keep this critical infrastructure resilient, the Metropolitan Tech Company (MTC) is advancing its Core Network Rehabilitation Programme, restoring and upgrading key sections of the City's fibre network to improve reliability and prepare for future digital growth.

Although largely unseen, the fibre network underpins municipal buildings, public Wi-Fi, digital communication systems and other smart city services. As demand for digital connectivity continues to grow, maintaining this infrastructure is becoming increasingly important.

Rehabilitation work is under way at several strategic locations, including Randburg, Hunters Hill, Sandton, Alexandra, Martindale, Roodepoort, Eldorado Park and Lenasia, with multiple projects progressing simultaneously across Johannesburg.

Before construction begins, MTC works closely with municipal departments and other stakeholders to secure wayleave approvals, identify existing underground services and confirm trench routes. This collaborative approach protects existing infrastructure, minimises disruption to communities and ensures work is carried out safely and efficiently.

As completed sections are brought online, they strengthen the network that supports communication across municipal facilities and delivers reliable digital services to residents.

According to MTC Network Technician Nsizwa Kubeka, investing in core network infrastructure is essential to keeping the City connected.

"Much of Johannesburg's digital infrastructure operates behind the scenes, but it plays a vital role in supporting the City's daily operations. Core network rehabilitation strengthens the fibre network that enables essential municipal services, improves network resilience and helps ensure residents continue to benefit from reliable connectivity now and into the future."

The Core Network Rehabilitation Programme forms part of MTC's commitment to building a smarter, more connected Johannesburg. By strengthening the City's digital backbone, the programme supports improved municipal services, greater network resilience and the digital infrastructure needed to meet the City's future needs.
