This Heritage Day, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is inviting Joburgers to step outside, dress in their South African colours and cultural regalia, and celebrate the country's diverse heritage in the city's beautiful public spaces. From Soweto to Sandton, Midrand to Eldorado Park, residents can enjoy free access to public parks and nature reserves.
Whether it's a picnic, morning jog, leisurely walk, hike, family gathering or simply enjoying a spectacular Joburg view, there is a green space for everyone.
Popular destinations include Thokoza Park, Dorothy Nyembe Park, Klipriversberg Nature Reserve, Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Zoo Lake, The Wilds, Melville Koppies, Rhodes Park, Mushroom Farm Park, Sandton Central Park, Innesfree Park, Kloofendal Nature Reserve, Florida Lake and Ivory Park Regional Park.
For those planning a traditional Heritage Day braai, JCPZ reminds visitors to use only designated braai areas. Fires must never be left unattended and must be completely extinguished before leaving. Ash must be placed in concrete bins and not around trees.
Parents and guardians are urged to keep children within sight, particularly around water, playgrounds and busy areas. Visitors should avoid bringing glass bottles and unnecessary valuables, use bins provided and take excess waste home.
JCPZ also encourages responsible behaviour and compliance with the City's Public Open Spaces By-laws. Park Rangers and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will conduct random patrols. Residents can report non-compliance to JMPD on 011 375 5911.
JCPZ Managing Director Thanduxolo Mendrew said the city's parks are “shared places of belonging, pride and possibility".
“This Heritage Day, we invite every Joburger to celebrate our diversity responsibly, protect our public spaces and help us build a city where everyone can enjoy the outdoors safely and with dignity," he said.
