Naturena Library teaches children safety skills during Child Protection Week

As part of the annual Child Protection Week, observed from 29 May to 5 June, the City of Johannesburg's Library and Information Service hosted an awareness programme at Naturena Library to teach young learners about personal safety, body awareness and the importance of speaking out.

The programme, aimed at crèche learners, created an engaging and interactive space where children confidently participated in discussions about staying safe. Learners were encouraged to report unsafe situations to trusted adults, including parents, grandparents, siblings and teachers, whenever they feel scared, uncomfortable or threatened.

Children watched educational cartoons demonstrating how to respond in unsafe situations. One lesson showed a child confidently saying “No, stop" to a stranger before reporting the incident to a teacher, reinforcing the importance of seeking help immediately.

The programme combined education with fun, as familiar songs from the popular children's programme Takalani Sesame encouraged learners to sing and dance while reinforcing important safety messages. The session ended on a high note with children proudly singing the “We Are the Smart Angels" song to celebrate what they had learnt.

MMC for Community Development Cllr Thapelo Amad welcomed the initiative, saying: “Protecting children is a shared responsibility. Programmes such as these equip our young learners with the knowledge and confidence to speak out, seek help, and understand that their safety matters. We continue to build safer communities where every child can grow, learn, and thrive without fear."
