The City of Johannesburg hosted the annual Jazz in the Lights festival at Johannesburg Zoo on Saturday, 21 March 2026.
Residents from all walks of life braved the rain to soak up the music, the people, the style, the food and the unmistakable energy. It was a full day of world-class jazz, culture and memorable moments under the open sky, as the Johannesburg Zoo transformed into a vibrant space where music met community.
From 10:00 to 22:00, revellers enjoyed a star-studded line-up of South African legends and international acts, including Maria João (Portugal), Jimmy Dludlu, Msaki and Brenda Mtambo. The festival also showcased artists such as Africa Mkhize, Malcolm Jiyane and rising talent Rorisang Sechele.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Thapelo Amad, described the event as a flagship platform celebrating the country's rich heritage and musical excellence.
“This year's Jazz in the Lights once again demonstrates the City's commitment to honouring our heritage and celebrating local talent. We appreciate the music lovers, organisers and performers who made this event possible. A country that does not celebrate its heritage risks losing its identity.
“On this historic Human Rights Day, we honour those who use their talent to showcase the beauty of our country through this annual event," he said.
One of the revellers, Obed Sibiya, travelled from Sebokeng in the Vaal with his family to attend. “We never miss this festival. It's the perfect mix of great music while the kids enjoy the zoo – it's like two experiences in one," he said.
Despite persistent rain, the venue became a sea of colourful umbrellas, with music lovers unfazed and fully prepared. The food offering matched the quality of the performances, adding to the overall experience.
As the sun set, the festivities carried on, with artists captivating the crowd. Dludlu, dressed in his signature suit and hat, delivered a mesmerising guitar performance that had revellers hanging on every note.
