Rendani Khorombi, Executive Head: Tourism Strategic Services at Joburg Tourism Company (JTC) is positioning Johannesburg as a leading global tourism destination. Having risen through the ranks at JTC, Khorombi now leads a portfolio that generates millions in economic impact for the City. He was appointed to his current role in October 2025. While the title may be new, he is no stranger to JTC, having spent nearly two decades growing learning and contributing to JTC's success.
Under his wing, in the first six months, the team has successfully generated an estimate R 123 million in economic impact, hosted Meetings Africa and developed 12 thematic routes.
Khorombi joined JTC as an intern in 2007 before becoming a Tourism Information Officer, Senior Tourism Information Officer, Business Tourism Officer, Manager: Visitor Services, Senior Manager: Convention & Visitor Services, and now Executive Head: Tourism Strategic Services.
“My vision is to position Johannesburg as a leading global tourism destination by leveraging its unique identity as a vibrant, multifaceted hub - a world-class city that blends rich history, diverse culture and dynamic urban energy."
Khorombi says key interventions will include promoting Johannesburg as premier destination that emerges business with leisure, expanding initiatives like the Tourism Ambassador Programme to ensure visitor safety, driving sustainable development and positioning the City as a global beacon for democracy and human rights anchored by iconic sites such as Constitution Hill and the Apartheid Museum.
He holds a BA in Tourism Development along with several additional certificates reflecting his commitment to continued learning and self-development. For him, success in the role could be measured by Johannesburg's growth and global standing.
“Success will mean robust recovery surpassing 2019 levels in terms of visitor numbers, marked by record international arrivals, thriving business tourism and event-driven growth. Johannesburg will be firmly established as Africa's top business and events hub, with major gatherings such as Meetings Africa generating significant visitor spend and economic impact," he says.
The next big project for JTC is the Tourism Master Plan. “The plan will be a game changer once various catalytic projects are rolled out to benefit tourism in the city. Watch this space!"
Outside of work, Khorombi enjoys playing and supporting soccer. Some of his favourite spots in Johannesburg include The Wilds Nature Reserve nestled in Houghton and the Soweto Towers.
What he loves most about the City “is its vibrant, cosmopolitan energy, perfect year-round climate and stunning green canopy. Johannesburg is one of the world's most treed cities."
