The University of Johannesburg's Government and Stakeholder Relations Department, in partnership with its School of Public Management, Governance and Public Policy, and the City of Johannesburg, will host a mock council on Friday, 27 March 2026, bringing together students from UJ, Wits and Unisa for a simulated council sitting.

This experiential learning initiative will see about 140 students take on the roles of councillors, constituents and key office-bearers, offering a hands-on introduction to the workings of local government and legislative processes.

Through preparation and engagement with proposed motions and policy matters, participants will gain valuable insight into how council meetings function and how decisions directly affect communities.

The mock council addresses the growing need for practical skills development in leadership, governance and civic responsibility. While many students engage with these concepts in theory, opportunities to apply them are often limited. Within this structured environment, students actively participate in democratic processes while strengthening key competencies such as debate, negotiation, public speaking and critical thinking.

The initiative also responds to a gap in practical exposure to decision-making, constructive engagement and accountable leadership in academic spaces. It helps build confidence and communication skills essential for future leaders, while promoting civic awareness and creating networking opportunities with peers, academics and governance professionals.

Centred around a structured agenda, the event tackles relevant community issues, including voter apathy ahead of the 2026 elections.

By encouraging robust discussion and active participation, the mock council cultivates a generation of informed, engaged and capable leaders ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
