Women in Ennerdale, Region G, were given an opportunity to access information, support services and skills development opportunities as the City hosted an interactive event at the Winnie Mabaso Foundation Centre.
The event focused on more than celebrating women. It provided a platform for women to learn about the practical support and economic opportunities available through the City and its partners.
Nare Kubyane, the Sub-Unit Head, acknowledged stakeholders and senior citizens who attended the event and highlighted the theme of “empowered women, empower the City".
He also informed attendees about the various services offered free of charge by the City and its stakeholder partners, including skills development and training programmes aimed at equipping residents with practical tools to become more self-reliant.
Substance abuse and gender-based violence (GBV) were among the key social challenges addressed during the engagement. Women were encouraged not to suffer in silence, but to seek help and intervention when they experience abuse or when substance abuse affects them or their families.
The City provides support through its social development services, including regional crisis lines for substance-abuse assistance. Residents were encouraged to approach the City and social workers based at clinics, to access appropriate assistance.
Lebojoy Foundation, an NPO supporting youth development, introduced residents to free practical skills training in areas including soap making, candle making, nail services and baking. The programme runs for three months, with training taking place once a week at community centres. Participants are equipped with skills that can potentially be used to establish small businesses and create income-generating opportunities.
The City's Food Resilience Unit (FRU) also shared information on the support available to emerging entrepreneurs who want to take locally produced products from an idea to the marketplace.
The FRU assists entrepreneurs with areas such as barcoding, labelling, product testing, storage, compliance with rules and regulations, and other requirements needed to strengthen products, and prepare them for placement on retail shelves.

Deputy Director: Skills, Solani Rikhotso, highlighted the leadership qualities of women and the importance of listening to their voices. “Women are natural leaders and the cries of women are the cries of the nation."
The programme concluded with the Social Development Department providing lunch for attendees and distributing food parcels to targeted beneficiaries.
