The City of Joburg will launch its Online Recruitment Database for People with Disabilities.

The database will launch Thursday, 1 April 2021.

This is in line with the COJ's Disability Recruitment Strategy 2020 – 2023, which seeks to communicate and commit to the importance of workplace inclusion, especially for People with Disabilities (PWD's).

The City will invite internal and external candidates to submit their Curriculum Vitae (CVs) online on the City's website.

The online recruitment database is targeted at people within occupational level 7 and below i.e.  skilled technical and academically qualified to unskilled occupational level. Preference will still be given to suitably qualified PWD candidate for position above level 7, however as indicated the strategy allows more relaxations for positions at level 7 and below.

A sign of commitment, the initiative aims to dismantle any form of discrimination and to achieve reasonable progress towards Employment Equity.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Councillor Loyiso Masuku said: "The City of Joburg is committed to adhering to the Employment Equity Act which compels employers to employ a minimum of 2% of PWDs and further urge the private sector to also adhere to the Act in addressing unemployment challenges that face PWDs within the City."

“PWDs should be treated equally and fairly in the workplace as they also bring skills and knowledge that enhance the progress of the employer. Hence, the City's purpose is to take on unfair discrimination of PWDs based on unfounded assumptions about their abilities and performance as a result of their physical challenges."

To ensure that the City creates an inclusive environment and fairness towards people living with disability, the initiative will allow for certain non-inherent job specifications to be relaxed.

It is hoped that this will help close the gap and allow PWDs to compete for occupation fairly when vacancies open.

For an example, for a position that normally requires a candidate to have 3-5 years of experience, 2 years will be required for PWDs.

“We have taken these steps to create a safe and inclusive work environment because this is crucial in realising the objectives of employment equity. Let us all create a work environment free from stereotype, stigmatisation or unfair discrimination towards people with disabilities," said Councillor Masuku.
