Today the City of Johannesburg kick-starts its educational public meeting on debt rehabilitation in Region F, south of Johannesburg.
The meetings; leading to the start of customer registrations on September 1, will be conducted in all seven regions of the City until the end of August.
Approved by Council recently, the programme is aimed at assisting defaulting customers and bringing them back into good standing on their municipal accounts. Through this programme, strained household owners who meet the criteria outlined below, are encouraged to apply for the municipal debt rehabilitation.
The criteria to qualify for the programme is as follows:
- Write-off are only applicable to residential account holders; and
- The account holders whose account balance is in arrears for more than 90 days as at 30 June 2019.
- The combined gross income from all activities of the account holder/s and spouse must be between R4 750 and R22 000 per month, and
- The market value of the property and all properties owned by the applicant must not exceed R600 000.00.
Qualifying customers will receive immediate relief through a 50% of the debt write off. They also qualify for a further write–off of the outstanding debt if they comply with all the conditions of the programme.
These include among others, keeping their current accounts up to date for a three-year period, and allowing for regular inspection of metered services.
Below is a list of venues and dates planned for the public meetings to ensure that the City reaches as many customers as possible.

The meeting will be followed by a range of stakeholder roadshows during the latter part of the campaign, details of which will be communicated in due course.
