I have been informed of a concerning matter involving a City Power imposter that assaulted and robbed a resident after gaining entry into their property.

This imposter presents himself to residents as a City Power meter reader. He has a counterfeit City Power card identifying him as Sifiso Khumalo.

This person in the picture is neither a City Power employee nor a contractor at City Power.

City Power has referred this matter to Group Forensic Investigative Services (GFIS) for further investigation and to bring this perpetrator to book. City Power’s internal security teams are also investigating this further.

Residents should not to allow any person, technician or contractor onto their property without first verifying credentials with City Power’s Security Risk Control Unit on 011 490 7911, 011 490 7553, 011 490 7900, or by contacting the Metering Call Centre number at 011 490 7484.

Residents are also encouraged to contact their nearest police station.

We cannot allow criminal elements to prey on residents, at the cost of actual employees and contractors not being able to do critical work that will better service delivery.

I therefore strongly urge residents to always request an identity card when approached by a City Power employee or contractor. This card will be colour coded for specific sections within the entity. The card will display a photo of the specific employee or contractor carrying said card. Their name, identification number and expiry date will also feature. A hologram of the firefly appears on the card as well.

Security Risk Control numbers, where damaged or scratched cards can also be reported to, appear on the back of the identification card.

Residents who are not home when City Power employees or contractors arrive to seek access for meter installation or meter reading are urged to contact City Power Metering Call Centre at 011 490 7484 to make arrangements for visits outside office hours or over the weekend.
