No administration is judged solely on its promises, but always on its ability to deliver on them. Therefore, it gave me great pleasure this morning to hand over a 115 specialised vehicles to the City of Johannesburg's entities and departments.
This took the total of new vehicles added to our fleet to 346. The other 231 were handed over to the relevant departments prior to today. At the beginning of this year, a purchase order was issued to fleet service provider for a purchase of these vehicles for the value of R247 million. This was based on the approved Fleet Replacement Plan for the 2018/19 financial year.
This is another feather in the cap of this proficient multiparty administration.
It was also a great pleasure to share such a momentous occasion with the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba, MMC for Community Development Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, City of Johannesburg COO Floyd Brink, and the relevant heads of the various entities. Mayor Mashaba's vision and leadership has made all of this possible.
These new specialised units will ensure that our departments can efficiently and effectively deliver essential services across all our regions. For example, it means that the delays in responding to power failures, faulty cables and cable thefts, which also endanger our communities, will be attended to timeously and efficiently.
As we know, potholes have been a cause for daily frustration to our motorists, causing massive damages to vehicles. Consequently, they have caused traffic jams and accidents. The introduction of the new specialised vehicles and equipment will ensure that all identified potholes are filled speedily and effectively.
Similarly, new and sophisticated equipment will mean Johannesburg Water can attend to burst pipes and leaks quicker. It will also assist in preventative scheduled maintenance.
All of this means that all our officials can carry out their duties in a safe environment due to new and safer equipment. I would like to encourage them to look after the new equipment to allow them to perform their many duties better.
The City of Johannesburg officials who worked on delivering this vast project also deserve the highest praise. It is no wonder that Group Corporate and Shared Services scored 100% on this particular Key Performance Indicator.
We are sensitive to the fact that we still have some way to go in our quest to deliver the change we envisage for all our residents. For many, the change can be seen but is yet to be felt. Our multiparty government recognises this and is driven by the potential to fulfil the expectations and the mandate given to us by residents.
