Tomorrow morning, 19 July 2019, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Group Corporate and Shared services, Cllr Ntombi Khumalo, in her acting capacity for Community Development, will be serving and engaging with members of the public at the Sandton Library during the extended hours.

Senior Library and Information Services Officials will be accompanying the MMC.

The Sandton Library opened - at its current location - in October 1994. When the Library opened the area around it was still residential, however, it is now situated in a very prestigious business district – also known as the richest square mile in Africa. The Library is currently mostly used by students from tertiary institutions.

As a result of a grant from provincial government, the Library has a comprehensive collection of art, craft and design books. Sandton Library also houses the Philatelic collection in LIS.

Despite challenges including a lack of free parking for library users and other issues arising from budgetary constraints, the Library receives regular visits from schools, and the eClassroom opens every day.

Other programmes offered at the Library include:

Story times
Chess sessions
Business Workshops with focus on women and youth
Holiday programs
Reading Development programmes
Youth programmes
Homework Assistance
Programme for PWD`s
Social inclusion programmes to celebrate national and international events

There has been a positive response to the extended hours by Library uses, with 3723 visits during the extended hours, and the Library has experienced a monthly average of 12 600 visitors over the past six months.

Over the next three financial years, the City has allocated R19 million for the improvement of the Centre of Excellence at the Library, as well as part of R10 million for RFID Tagging to ensure greater security for library resources across the City.

Additionally, the Library and Information Services Directorate within the Community Development Department has been partnering with organisations such as Friends of the Library and private sector organisations such as Google for additional resources.
