Tomorrow, the 15th of July 2019, the Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, and the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Nico de Jager, will visit six families in Soweto who have been plunged into darkness after Eskom cut off power to large areas of the township.

The mayor will visit the six families - three in Braamfischer, near Dobsonville, and three in Orlando - to shine a spotlight on their plight and demand, on their behalf, an immediate resolution to the crisis brought upon them by Eskom’s carelessness.

The families have been without electricity, for up to two weeks, after Eskom cut off power to their homes as part of credit management processes. Eskom insists that Soweto residents owe it about R18 billion.

However, through correspondence with the Office of the Executive Mayor, the families have been able to prove that their Eskom accounts are fully paid up.
Despite this, these innocent families now live in darkness because the power utility has lumped them together with residents who have not paid their Eskom accounts, some for a number of years.

Details of the Mayor’s visit are as follows:

Date: 15 July 2019
Time: 11:00am
Starting Point: 9584 Braamfischer, Phase 2, Soweto

Members of the media are invited to cover the Mayor’s visit.
