This past Saturday, 22 June 2019, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo cleaned up the Alex Cemetery as part of the monthly A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign.
Some of the issues dealt with included the illegal occupation of the caretaker’s quarters, the over 1, 500 second burials which needed to be documented, the broken fence which is continuously damaged for access as a thoroughfare, the ground water seeping through on the bottom end of the cemetery as well as live illegal connections from the Eskom Substation in the cemetery and the never ending illegal dumping on the perimeter of the fence.
Residents and the various entities came out in their numbers and the clean-up was a great success.
“I would like to urge residents to stop illegal dumping, as this affects the cleanliness and sanctity of the cemetery. Residents are reminded to be considerate of graves, and not to vandalize the fence. I would like to commend the residents who joined the clean-up, and encourage them to continue keeping the cemetery and surrounds clean”, said MMC for Community Development, Councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba.
“We have engaged the Speaker’s Office in the City who will facilitate a meeting with all relevant stakeholders to see how we can put in place some sustainable solutions to revitalize the cemetery, as well as to erect a June 17 memorial in the cemetery precinct”, she added.
