The Public Safety Department has noted with concern social media posts alleging corrupt activity which is said to have taken place at the City’s Marlboro Licensing Centre on Thursday, 20 June, 2019.

The picture posted shows a man seemingly trying to peak at an unsuspecting customer’s bank pin and CCV code at the back of the card, which it is alleged, he would then share with the counter staff. It is believed that the pair planned to defraud the customer by using the bank card information obtained.

The MMC for Public Safety, Councillor Michael Sun said his department will not tolerate any corrupt activity taking place at any of the City of Joburg’s licensing centres.

“You can rest assured that any employee found to be engaged or facilitate any corrupt activity will be dealt with in the most serious light. Since we came into administration of the City, we have put in place action steps and projects to improve the service levels at our licensing centre, these include firm steps to combat corruption and upgrade the licensing centres with technology to expedite service delivery and eliminate fraud and corruption.

“We are not taking this allegation as just another social media post, if the allegations are true then we need to take serious steps to deal with the staff member and also bring the accomplice to book,” he added.

The Department would also like to assure customers that it is addressing bottlenecks and the slow turnaround time in the services provided.

“We have noted the complaints that the online bookings system sometimes does not give available slots, we have engaged with the Provincial Department of Transport which hosts and manages the online booking system, we will continue to give inputs so the online booking systems improves” said MMC Sun.

Customers are encouraged to assist the Department to fight corruption and report any fraud and corrupt activities at the Licensing Centres to the City of Joburg.
