Two male employees; aged 30 and 33 respectively, who are employed by a City Power contractor, were arrested yesterday for soliciting a bribe of R5 000 from a resident in Kensington, east of Johannesburg.

The pair is detained at the Jeppe Police Station, and will appear at the Jeppe Magistrate's Court on Monday, 18 March 2019. They will be charged for corruption and extortion.

It is alleged that the suspects had removed the electric meter from the particular property, and subsequently demanded R5 000 from the homeowner, who is also a pensioner, in order to reconnect electricity.

Unfortunately, this is not a once-off incident – I would like to commend residents who refuse to be part of any corrupt activity and continue to report such matters to the City and our Group Forensic and Investigation Services (GFIS) team, which can be trusted to act swiftly to deal with the matters.

Corruption has no place in this administration and we will work tirelessly, and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, to ensure that the residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve.

I would also like to encourage people to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24hour tipoff hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the GFIS offices situated at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein.
