It’s been seven years since Weheartbeat first brought beat culture enthusiasts and music lovers together on dancefloors, whether poolside on balmy afternoons, in warehouses, neighbourhood bars, festival grounds or various other unexpected interactive spaces in the night time.
And now it’s time for you to pack out Arts on Main in Maboneng to celebrate a momentous anniversary.
Having driven a new and rich appreciation for a beat-centric sound that was starting to take off internationally but fresh to audiences in South Africa, Weheartbeat co-founders and partners, Dominique Soma (an event specialist and music consultant) and Sims Phakisi (a DJ, producer and videographer), established an influential collective of creative music makers and followers in 2012.
The trailblazers have since, hosted unmissable and one-of-a-kind events where international artists like Tall Black Guy, Young Fathers, Eric Lau, Masego, Peanut Butter Wolf and many more have given hip hop heads and those seeking soulful electronic tempos a growing local scene.
Their homegrown business consists of a concept record store, informative music workshops, exhibitions, film, listening sessions, monthly mixes, a music booking agency and successful and standout live events.
As Kwanele Sosibo wrote about the team in a Mail & Guardian article in early Jan 2017, their “tentacles of influence are beginning to spread to other interrelated spheres.”
It’s not just about a passion for music or a party - it’s about connecting people through a multimedia beat platform, stimulating their senses through art and collaborating with artists and fans to create a community that largely hooks into an alternative culture.
Which is largely how they’re going to celebrate all their years of love, life and beats for their seventh anniversary.
Over three days, Weheartbeat will be hosting a mini doc screening, a meet and greet session with Children of Zeus, Full Crate and Hannah Faith, a main party event with these beatmakers as well as Deniece Marz, Gina Jeanz, Symatics, Jingo and Bon Bon Vie, an exhibition by Hannah Faith and Weheartbeat curated by Riley PG and then an invite-only anniversary dinner.
