Following his oversight visit this morning, the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, Cllr Nico De Jager, has confirmed that Johannesburg Water will complete the R21 million water pipe replacement project in Forest Town by next month.
The pipe replacement project, which was split into four phases, commenced in February - with the final phase expected to be completed in the next few weeks.
The length of the pipes being replaced comes to an impressive total of 8,5kms.
MMC De Jager said the rolling out of the pipe replacement programme will ensure that the number of bursts per kilometre and the number of blockages per kilometre is reduced, resulting in improved levels of service to consumers in the City. In addition, 40 local labourers and four SMME’s were given an opportunity to be a part of this project.
“I am pleased with the work being done here as this is an essential project which will improve customer experience in Forest Town and the surroundings, and ensure sustainable water provision to our residents,” MMC De Jager said.
It is estimated that on average Joburg Water pipe replacement per year should amount to R415 million for water and R435 million for sewer, in order to meet the pipe renewal target of replacing 1.5% of its asset value per year.
During the 2018/19 financial year 42, 977 pipe bursts occurred, which is a decline from the 43, 301 burst pipes in the 2017/18 financial year and 45, 177 burst pipes reported in 2016/17 financial year. This decrease is mainly attributable to improved pressure management and an accelerated pipe replacement programme.
