The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo, on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, extends heartfelt condolences to the Twala Family on the passing of the legendary actor and an iconic performer, Mme Mary Twala.
Mary Twala enjoyed a career in the entertainment and arts industry that has spanned over six decades.
“We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mme Mary Twala. She was an icon, a leading and veteran South African thespian" said Mayor Makhubo
Mme Twala was bestowed with the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by His Excellency, President Cyril Ramaphosa, an award which recognizes South Africans who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport. She received this honor in recognition for her excellent contribution to the performing arts and raising awareness on women's health issues through storytelling.
“This recognition demonstrates her immense contribution to the Arts fraternity in its entirety. Through her creative craft, Mme' Twala was part of the glue that brought society together, contributing to social cohesion and building a united South Africa. This is truly a great loss to our people and country."
“Future generations in the Arts shall reap the fruits of the seeds she planted. We are most indebted to her as the City of Johannesburg, for her work in raising awareness on various national issues through storytelling and for her contribution to the arts. She departs and joins a galaxy of stars who lived and made this great City of Johannesburg what it is, a world class African City" added Mayor Makhubo.
