The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo, welcomes the Directive issued by the Gauteng Provincial Executive Council (EXCO) to the City of Johannesburg as a result of the Municipality not being able to convene and approve an annual budget before the start of the municipal financial year.

 

The EXCO convened an extraordinary Executive Council meeting on 4 July 2020 to deliberate on steps to take following the Municipal Council not being able approve an annual budget timeously. The EXCO has directed the Johannesburg Municipal Council to convene urgently to approve its budget for the 2020/2021 municipal financial year, by no later than 10 July 2020.

 

In line with the directive by the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in Gauteng, the Speaker of Council, Councilor Nonceba Molwele has been copied on the communique by the MEC and she will convene Council soonest to facilitate compliance with directives.

 

“We accept and welcome the Directives of the Provincial Government. The City will endeavor to satisfy all its obligations and we remain confident that a budget will be passed within the timelines set. This will allow us to ensure that the work of providing services to the residents of Johannesburg and responding to the needs of the most vulnerable and poor within the City continues" said Mayor Makhubo
