The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Eunice Mgcina, today, in response to the pronouncements by President Cyril Ramaphosa pertaining to the escalation of the government's response to COVID-19, urged residents to work with the City to curb the spread of the virus.

MMC Mgcina has offered the following guidelines for those patients who intend to visit the City's clinics. These are intended to minimize the number of people visiting clinics during the period of the lockdown:

  • Patients stable on chronic medicines will be issued with a two-month supply at a time.
  • All other planned vaccinations for children and adults will continue and where changes are made, patients will be informed timeously.

As part of the City's efforts to decongest clinics the department has taken the following further steps:

  • Increase medication pickup points across the regions working closely with its partners.
  • Medication can be collected at the Sharp-left containers placed on clinic grounds.
  • All clinics will continue to operate normal hours between 7am and 6pm.
  • Limited hours on Saturdays.

However, it should also be noted that due to the prevailing circumstances, there are shortages in certain medicines and efforts are being made to source stock and normalize operations. The City will communicate regularly with our patients and communities to minimize panic and advise on alternatives.

“Working with National and Provincial departments of Health, the City of Johannesburg's health department will continue to communicate changes to the clinic operations to better manage the envisaged disruptions to the normal and standard operating procedures."

“We again appeal to our residents to cooperate and work with us during this period in order to guarantee the health and safety of all. Let us please wash our hands for 20 seconds, maintain social distance and avoid crowds at all times. Stay at Home and avoid unnecessary travel" concluded MMC Mgcina.
