The Transport Department and the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) are currently developing the Roodepoort CBD Transport Master Plan (TMP), which is set for completion in nine months on 30 June 2021.

The main objective of the TMP is to address the chaotic transport environment and provide a fully integrated public transport system in the Roodepoort CBD. The development is expected to improve accessibility and mobility while enhancing social inclusion for residents of the City of Johannesburg.

It will determine the appropriate modes of transport (including walking, cycling and minibus taxis, conventional buses and meter taxis) for Roodepoort CBD and how these modes can be accommodated to meet existing and future transport demand in a sustainable manner.

The City is committed to developing a feasible medium to long-term solution to transport-related issues in the Roodepoort CBD that comply with the principles of an efficient urban form. The full development potential of the Roodepoort CBD can be achieved through future densification and land-use strategies, says Transport Department Acting Executive Director Jeff Ngcobo.

“Some of the key benefits of this plan is that it will drive economic development, improve safety and security of the transport system. The City also wants to create an attractive node that will contribute to the regeneration of the CBD, which will in turn attract businesses into the area,” adds Ngcobo.

The Roodepoort CBD currently has existing public transport infrastructure and services that are inadequate. This is evident in the informal ranking, poor road signage and poor pedestrian infrastructure like poor sidewalk condition, unmanaged on-street parking, which results in a busy and chaotic environment in the CBD.

The implementation of the plan will provide an efficient and effective, transport system that integrates land use and public transport plans. The development will involve extensive engagement with Roodepoort residents, commuters, businesses, property owners, taxi operators, bus services, taxi hailing services, trolley pushers and all interested parties.
