City of Joburg MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) Cllr Mpho Moerane calls on the City’s residents, lobby groups and business community to take action in protecting the environment, and be part of the solution, as the City commemorates International Biodiversity Day.

This year the day is commemorated on Saturday, May 22nd.

This year, the International Biodiversity Day will be commemorated under the theme “We are part of the solution” with the aim of raising global awareness about the importance of protecting biological resources and the global biodiversity that shapes our environment. Biodiversity is a term that puts the spotlight on nature, with the emphasis on the relationship between humans and nature.

MMC Moerane, said: “Citizens, businesses and environmental groups are encouraged to take action in protecting the environment, humans are part of the solution to help revive lost habitats and ecosystems. Furthermore, if we protect the water, air and open spaces around us, we can then decrease the impact of climate change.”

The City’s Environment and Infrastructure Service Department has a role to conserve the City’s natural resources to ensure sustainable delivery of ecosystems benefits, to protect nature and ecosystem services, improve air quality, raise environmental awareness and better manage water and waste.

The department has on one of its projects partnered with City Parks and Zoo in implementing the Alien Invasive Species Management and Control project, which is aimed at managing and controlling alien invasive species.

The City cannot undertake this crucial projects alone, that is why there has been a need for environmental education and observing of environmental-themed days with communities.
