The City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department condemns the vandalism of the Rea Vaya infrastructure by community protesters in Soweto, last night, Monday 24 May 2021.

The Noordgesig station has been damaged, with the ticketing office machine (computer box), wiring system stolen and windows broken. The station is now closed and passengers will be advised when it will be reopened.

Ten buses (eight from Litsamaiso and two from Piotrans bus operating companies) were damaged. The buses were attacked with stones resulting in the breaking of windows.
Three passengers and two drivers were injured and received medical assistance.

The estimated cost of the damage will be determined in due course. To date, three Rea Vaya stations (Noordgesig, Bosmont and Westbury) have been damaged due to community protests. The City of Johannesburg encourages communities to engage with Council on service delivery problems and challenges.

“This incident of lawlessness and disorder has once again deprived local residents in Soweto, workers, tertiary students, scholars and patients who use this service, access to affordable public transport,” said Councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport in the City of Johannesburg.

“The City condemns the vandalism of public infrastructure, which is aimed at providing a service to the public,” said MMC Makhuba.
She called on the police to ensure that those responsible face the full might of the law and urged community members to find amicable solutions to service delivery issues and concerns.

Passengers who were using the Noordgesig Station are advised to use Orlando Stadium and Noordgesig Extension stations.
