Today I note with sadness, and even a deep sense of anger, the passing of Alex FM's Mr Joshua Mbatha, better known as DJ Jorontinah, who was robbed and shot in the chest by unknown gunmen while walking home from work in Alexandra and later died from his wounds.

His contribution to community media, an important pillar of news and information dissemination, cannot be overstated.

May his family, friends and colleagues find strength and comfort at this tragic time.

There is seemingly a gang terrorising residents of Alexandra, as five people were shot and succumbed to their injuries, while another five people were shot and injured, in a single day.

This mass shooting follows another mass shooting in Nomzamo Informal Settlement, Soweto this past week.

These are not just attacks on individuals but an attack on the social fibre and stability of the City.

I am encouraged to learn that the Provincial SAPS Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, has activated the necessary operations to track down and arrest these thugs who have shattered countless lives and livelihoods.

I have also been in contact with the Joburg Metro Police Department's Chief Maxwell Khanyile, who has increased visibility in the area.

As the City, we will support the SAPS in whichever way necessary.

On behalf of the Joburg Multi-Party Government, I wish to convey my condolences to the entire Alexander community and wish a speedy recovery to those who have been hospitalised.

We are committed to building a safe and secure Joburg. The City's residents cannot live in fear.
