The Joburg Multi-Party Government would like to convey a message of gratitude to the Department of Community Development and its entity, Joburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), for their professionalism and efficiency in providing graves and associated services to the funeral services of the late Ambassador Ms. Jessie Duarte, and poet and activist Mr. Don Mattera.
The City and the nation lost Duarte on 17 July and Mattera on 18 July. Both these stalwarts were part of the Muslim community whose burials conclude within 24 hours after their passing.
JCPZ came to the forefront, making sure that both these individuals secured burial spaces at the Heroes’ Acres of West Park Cemetery. The City entity provided a pristine, beautiful, clean, and safe environment to the family, friends, and fellow mourners to bury their loved ones.
On behalf of the Joburg Multi-Party Government gratitude to JCPZ and the cemetery management team for their responsiveness and the manner and dignity with which they received mourners at the cemeteries.
I would also like to thank MMC Ronald Harris for the leadership he has shown during this period.
Once again, I convey condolences to families and loved ones of the Duarte and Mattera families, respectively.
