The Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) is deeply saddened by the passing of a City Power technician in the line of duty on Thursday.

Kallie Van Vuuren was responding to an outage in Wilropark when he was electrocuted tracing a cable fault in Molopo street. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene after swiftly arriving shortly after the incident.

“My heart absolutely breaks for Mr van Vuuren and his family,” MMC for EISD Cllr. Michael Sun said.

“It is utterly devastating to lose someone in the line of duty like this. When all he was trying to do was ensure the people of Johannesburg have basic services.”

Mr Van Vuuren served the people of Johannesburg for 20 years as a City Power technician with a specific focus on restoring power in large-scale outages.

“His colleagues say he was a meticulous and diligent artisan that always strived for absolute perfection,” MMC for EISD Cllr. Michael Sun said.

“The entire City Power team is devastated by this incident and a full-scale investigation will be launched to find out the exact circumstances of this untimely death.”

Mr Van Vuuren is survived by his wife and two children. City Power officials will be visiting the family on Friday.
