On Monday morning, alongside the Minister of Police Bheki Cele, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko, Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, SAPS Johannesburg District Commissioner, Major-General Max Masha and Joburg Metro Police Department's Acting Chief Max Khanyile, we were briefed on the fatal shooting that took place in Nomzamo Informal Settlement in the early hours of Sunday morning. We further articulated the contributions that the three spheres of government will be making to ensure the sustained safety and security of the community.

Through a community meeting, we further heard from and reported back to the community about what we as leaders in government have been doing and will be doing going forward.

As the City we will be complementing the work of the SAPS through various JMPD Buya Mthetho by-law enforcement operations. These operations will include increased patrolling of crime hotspots, ensuring compliance with liquor regulations, stop and search operations, building land-use inspections, as well as attending to persistent service delivery issues in the community. These are immediate interventions the City will be making.

What stuck out is the need for continued coordination and cooperation between the City, Gauteng Provincial Government and National Government, who play different but complimentary roles in law enforcement and general service delivery. A solid relationship between the three spheres of government will go a long way in preventing and policing criminality.

While we are close to finding the right model, work is at an advanced stage of finalising the City Safety Strategy, which the SAPS is playing an instrumental role in developing with the JMPD.

On behalf of the Joburg Multi-Party Government, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to those who were hospitalised due to the shooting.

Incidents like these cannot become common place. Thus, our need to
give continued effect to the Mayoral Priority of building a safe and secure City, with all relevant stakeholders, including the communities, is a non-negotiable.

Although the motives behind the shootings are still unknown, we trust that the SAPS investigations will bring closure to those who have been affected and that the perpetrators wild be held to account without delay.
