I am saddened by news that renowned poet, author, social activist and Johannesburg resident Don Mattera has died at the age of 87.
An extraordinary man, who devoted his life to public service and helping others, he continued to fight for equality to the end of his life.
Mattera who contributed immensely to the rich literature in South Africa and Africa, died a few days after receiving a Special Recognition during the unveiling of the Diamond Walk where we celebrated 60-years of the Joburg Theatre.
The Don Mattera Legacy Foundation which he established in 2020 will benefit generations to come, through various programmes for the youth.
To the Mattera family, friends and the entire arts industry, my sincere condolences on behalf of the Joburg Multi-Party Government.
It is profound that he died on Mandela Day.
