The City of Johannesburg wishes to inform residents of a notice that Frankenwald Developments (Pty) Ltd has undertaken a spatial planning process, including public participation, according to City of Johannesburg guidelines to prepare an Urban Development Framework (UDF) for the area known as 'Frankenwald'.
The Urban Development Framework (UDF) sets out the spatial framework and guidelines for the development of Frankenwald. The UDF will be adopted as a City of Johannesburg policy once approved by Council.
The 'Frankenwald' site is one of the few remaining undeveloped and centrally located sites within the City. This strategic location has the potential to become a place of significance within Johannesburg and the Gauteng City Region.
The site is situated on the remaining extent of Portion 5 of the farm Bergvalei 37 IR, which is owned by the University of the Witwatersrand. It is located between Buccleuch, Kelvin, Alexandra and Linbro Park and on the Randburg to OR Tambo corridor.
Frankenwald land is planned to become a compact urban settlement served by integrated public transport services due to its position and can easily serve as a model for future affordable housing.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Development Planning, Cllr Belinda Echeozonjoku reiterated the city's commitment towards eradicating existing social and geographic divides, where people, especially the poor, live far from employment opportunities.
“We have taken on the challenge of developing higher density through introducing affordable housing opportunities in well located land in the city to support positive social, economic and spatial integration," said Cllr Echeozonjoku.
It is equally important that, developments of this nature, whenever they are proposed be guided by the City of Johannesburg Guidelines to Prepare an Urban Development Framework (UDF). This includes issuing of notices to the public to ensure adherence to a comprehensive and inclusive public participation process as per the city's guidelines.
The city invites interested and affected parties to one of the three scheduled public engagement sessions below:
