We have been following the matter closely and to our utter disgust the ill treatment of Dr Tim De Maayer has continued. In a bizarre turn of events, the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital last week took disciplinary action against Dr De Maayer for allegedly thanking friends, family and colleagues for supporting him.

I continue to pledge my support to Dr De Maayer and cannot sit silently while a model citizen is crucified by those who claim to run our health facilities. We as a city and province are experiencing skills shortages with nurse-to-patient and doctor-to-patient ratios being far lower than the recommended ratios. We’re wasting time and money persecuting the very people who serve our citizens at our hospitals and clinics while questioning why we face an exodus of skilled workers.

I urge the CEO of Rahima Moosa and the MEC of Health in the Gauteng to start making better use of our resources. We call on the two to focus their time, attention and energy on rectifying the issues that Dr De Maayer highlighted in his open letter, and to work closely with those who care enough to speak up so that we can work together to fix the problems our healthcare facilities face.

The MEC must to stop the disciplinary hearings brought against Dr De Maayer and make quick work of firing those involved in the ludicrous witch-hunt that has ensued against a model doctor in the last two weeks.

A famous quote, often attributed to Edmund Burke, says: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” For so long this quote resonated deeply with me. Today, I realised that the quote requires a corollary: “The reason evil continues to triumph is as a result of good people being silenced.”
