The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) are investigating the cause of a fire at the Joburg Market. On Saturday, 19th of March 2022, a section of the Fruit Hall at the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market caught fire at an electrical substation on the High Voltage (HV) side.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a service provider, who specializes in electrical engineering services offered to the Joburg Market, was on site and working on the electrical reticulation in Halls 5 and 6 when the incident occurred at approximately 21:07. Security personnel on duty immediately reported the incident to the EMS and Joburg Market maintenance department. EMS arrived on site and extinguished the fire timeously.

The affected area was electrically isolated and will be cordoned-off to ensure continuity of power to non-affected areas and that the facility remains safe. City Power, EMS and CoJ Insurer were on site to ascertain the extent of the damage and will provide the necessary reports in due course.

The MMC of Economic Development at the City, Cllr Nkuli Mbundu and JM Board of Directors were on site on Saturday night and Sunday morning to provide guidance and oversight on the recovery process underway.

The Joburg Market remains committed to ensure minimum disruptions to business operations, which are continuing as normal.
