By joining in the celebration of Casual Day on 2 September 2022, the City of Johannesburg continues to strengthen our partnership with Casual Day. The theme this year focuses on Persons with Disabilities.
We are proud to say that many of the City’s employees have contributed towards our fundraising efforts by purchasing merchandise and stickers in support of this campaign. Through our partnership with the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), the proceeds will be handed over to various organisations to assist disadvantaged groups.
Despite the existence of a sound policy and legislative framework designed to give substance to basic rights enshrined in the Constitution, many persons with disabilities are still confronted with inequality and unfair discrimination within society and in the job market, 28 years into our democracy.
Some of the challenges faced include inadequate recruitment, a lack of accessibility in our buildings and a lack of reasonable accommodation for certain types of disabilities. Our City must create an enabling environment for all people to thrive and we must promote diversity within our organisation.
In support of the Executive Mayor, Cllr Mpho Phalatse’s priority of ensuring that Johannesburg becomes an inclusive city, the City’s Group Corporate and Shared Services department is leading Johannesburg’s campaign in support of providing opportunities and access, which promotes an inclusive workplace that is free from unfair discrimination.
We want this to be more than just a fundraising exercise – we want it to be a concerted effort to bring meaningful change within the City to realise our goal of rebuilding Johannesburg as an inclusive City that works for the benefit of all residents.
I would like to thank all employees of the City for always being front and centre in supporting initiatives that serve to promote a better and more inclusive environment.
