The City of Johannesburg in Region E will roll out an integrated environmental management and clean-up programme known as “Ke Kasi Yarona” in Alexandra on Thursday, 02 February 2023.
The programme forms part of the Public Employment Programme (PEP) sponsored by Treasury. It includes the distribution of rat cages aimed at promoting a rat-free and clean Alex. It will also involve education ambassadors who will collect the cages from a collection point and distribute them to identified and registered community points.
A total of 36 educational ambassadors will be deployed in all nine wards in Alexandra to educate residents about keeping their environment clean. They will also distribute the cages and creatively introduce clean-up operations with the participation of the residents.
The initiative will also include sports as well as arts and culture to get the youth on board. It will have recycling initiatives to turn Alexandra waste into an economy opportunity.
The ambassadors are from Alexandra and familiar with the surroundings. They will work together with the City’s Augmented Field Services workers who are always on the ground.
The ambassadors and their team leaders will also act as a liaison between the City and the residents to close any communication gaps.
All the respective wards’ councillors have been fully briefed about the project. The initiative will be implemented in the wards 75,76,81,91,105,107,108,109 and 116 within the Region E.
The Regional Director for Region E in the City of Johannesburg, Liziwe Ntshinga-Makoro, has expressed her excitement about the commencement of this programme and is looking forward to seeing it succeed.
“I hope this crucial initiative reaches its potential as the City is making a clarion call to all the residents of Alexandra to embrace and support this programme,” says Ntshinga-Makoro.
