The City of Johannesburg joins the rest of the country and the music fraternity around the world to mourn the passing of Kiernan Jarred Forbes who was professionally known as AKA along with his longtime friend and manager Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane.

The country and indeed the world have been robbed of exceptional talent that has projected South Africa positively. The role that AKA played in launching and contributing to the careers of countless other artists is one of the outstanding highlights of his career that will dearly be missed. His kindness has impacted many South Africans.

AKA was one of South Africa's most prolific rap and hip-hop sensations. His contribution to the South African music landscape will remain an aspirational legacy for generations to come.

The passing of Tebello "Tibz" Motsoane was a blow to the creative industries because he was a multi-talented creative who was a fashion designer, a chef and a creative entrepreneur. Tibz had a diversity of skills that were useful for his friends and business associates. Tibz was a culinary connoisseur, a fashion fundi and was one of the key contributors to the growth of AKA as a brand and an artist having been his manager before. His role in the creative industries will forever be remembered.

We are quite concerned as a City of the senseless killing of many artists and wish to urge our communities to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes face the full might of the law.

The City of Johannesburg would like to extend heartfelt condolences to the Forbes and the Motsoane families, relatives and fans. The loss of your sons is a hard pain to bear. You will be in our thoughts and prayers throughout this difficult period.

May the souls of these great sons of South Africa rest in peace.
